Feeling The Orlando Impact On San Francisco’s 2016 Pride Parade

The Orlando nightclub shooting undoubtedly cast a pall this year on San Francisco’s 46th annual Pride Parade.  When compared to last year, crowds seemed thinner, police presence heavier, and overall purpose more earnest.  Many contingents still marched and danced in garish costumes and championed LGBTQ rights but a significant amount of other groups offered tributes to the shooting victims, rebuked hate crimes, and otherwise chose a more serious tone.
Though the curtain of trepidation may have fallen on many parade organizers and those who stayed at home this year, it didn’t seem to inflict attendees.  The crowd was as carefree and jovial as ever, bustling around Market Street sidewalks, dancing, cheering, and engaging with parade marchers.
